Energy use has come to involve extremely damaging resource extraction activities. Tar sands exploitation in Alberta, Canada and high volume hydraulic fracturing (HVHF) also known as “fracking” are taking a terrible toll on air quality and water quality in North America. These practices should be abandoned and energy conservation should become our nation’s number one energy use strategy.
People can only be healthy if they eat healthy food. In today’s marketplace there is a vast spectrum of food choices, many of which are not healthy. The scientific literature constitutes a sound basis for concluding that persistent organic pollutants (POPs) exposure at current levels of food supply contamination is imposing significant disease risk upon those who consume animal fats. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have become widespread in the food supply without any research basis for concluding that these products are safe to consume. Cancer rates are increasing. Diabetes rates are increasing. Behavioral disorders including ADHD are becoming more prevalent.
Everyone, regardless of financial status should have access to healthy food. The federal government must take steps to assure that all Americans can obtain foods that will create and maintain a healthy body. Organic foods are too expensive for those at the bottom of the economic ladder. We need a program that makes organic food available to anyone who wants it. This would involve giving organic food away to those who can not afford it. Our country is rich enough to do this. It is the best investment that we can make in the future. What is given away in organic food will be multiplied many times over in savings on Medicaid costs. — Donald L.
