DIAFERIA: THE SEPTEMBER 11TH ATTACKS MUST BE SERIOUSLY INVESTIGATED (EDITORIAL)

In his textbook Politics in America, political scientist Thomas Dye argues that political activists on the extreme left and right wings tend to be “conspiracy theorists”. Thus, according to Dye, to believe in the existence of self-interested collusion is to hold an extreme viewpoint. Unfortunately, after a decade and a half in higher education I have found Dye’s viewpoint to be troublingly common among some academics.

More troubling, however, is the apparent threshold at which certain data graduate from the rubric of “accepted” narrative into what might be considered the recondite world of licentious conspiracism. Although it is generally accepted that conspiracies in the form of covert action do exist (irrespective of whether they are deemed crimes against humanity or necessary evils), allegations of conspiracies carried out by clandestine US forces against US citizens are quickly judged to be in excess of traditional boundaries. For example, few on either the political left or right would dismiss the role of the CIA in the overthrows of Mossadeq in Iran (still called Persia in 1953), Kassem in Iraq, Arbenz in Guatemala, Lumumba in the Congo, Sukarno in Indonesia, Bosch in the Dominican Republic, Allende in Chile, Chavez (briefly overthrown in 2002) in Venezuela, and so on. Yet, the moment evidence is adduced of illicit US government involvement in say—the murders of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X; the destruction of TWA Flight 800 in 1996, the downing of Korean Airlines Flight 007 in 1983, the London bombings of 2005, and the Aurora Colorado shootings, on come the accusations of paranoia, blasphemy, un-Americanism, and the mother of all imbecilic rejoinders “If you think the US government would harm its own people why don’t you go live somewhere else?”.

From what I have experienced over the last 11 years, the most notorious example of skepticism among intellectuals is that surrounding the attacks of September 11th 2001, and the responsibility for its execution. In this instance, many otherwise politically literate people suspend any suspicion that the 9/11 attacks may have been a self-inflicted catastrophe. Instead they often prefer the laughable suggestion that poorly armed militants operating out of caves in Afghanistan were far more capable of eluding NORAD than were rogue elements within the US’s national security establishment. “Bush and Cheney are not smart enough to have engineered the attacks”, one often hears.

Then there are the coincidence theorists who attribute the massive “failure” of US intelligence on the morning of September 11th to multiple, simultaneous blunders at all levels of government, defying all known laws of averages—which, incidentally, is the official line taken by the “independent” commission that supposedly investigated the attacks. In addition, similarly fanciful explanations have been fashioned with regard to the physics and kinesiology of the collapses of the Twin Towers. Here the infamous CIA publication Popular Mechanics was once again (as in 1996, following the shoot-down of TWA Flight 800) enlisted to provide their unique brand of science fiction to explain what could only have been a deliberate implosion. Indeed, any group or individual who eagerly cites Popular Mechanics’ scientifically deranged explanations must immediately be deemed suspect.

In other instances, when faced with overwhelming evidence that 9/11 was a false-flag attack, along with other historical precedents such as Operation Northwoods, and antecedents such as the neocon syndicate’s open contemplation of the need for “a new Pearl Harbor”, some might reluctantly stipulate to the possibility of a homegrown conspiracy. However, such capitulation is quickly followed by insistence that 9/11 Truth threatens to “distract” the antiwar movement. Of course, when I have asked what could be more energizing to an antiwar movement than the reality that the war’s actuating event was a contrived fiction, I have never gotten an answer.

Finally, when efforts to defend the official fiction surrounding the September 11th attacks are shown to be futile, the inevitable question is, why? Why would the Bush Administration perpetrate such an act of mass murder upon its own people? The answer to this is almost too simple: To bestir public opinion into the recriminatory nationalism necessary for imperial mobilization. More simply, to instill fear and create the enemy image necessary for the war on terror—planned in the 1990s—to go forward.

Collectively, the attacks of September 11, 2001 were the largest single act of mass murder in United States history. Thousands of Americans were killed to facilitate the killing of millions more in the Middle East and south Asia. September 11th ushered in a new era in the US’s long and tortured history of imperial plunder, and there is no longer reason to merely speculate as to this horrendous reality. As oil production reaches its peak, the rulers of our society have deemed it a geostrategic imperative to forcibly appropriate the world’s remaining resources. The US’s attack on its own people, and the attribution of the attack to the fictional Al Qaeda was apparently the only means by which the architects of the war on terror could obtain the imprimatur of the American people.

Therefore, while political and academic decorum may require speculative language, equivocation, and euphemisms, I will dispense with all three as I call for a new and truly independent national investigation into the following:

1.) Vice-President Dick Cheney’s re-write of emergency protocols which gave him complete presidential power over NORAD on September 11th.

2.) Reports of Osama Bin Laden meeting with the CIA, first in Dubai, and then in Pakistan, in the weeks prior to the September 11th attacks.

3.) Reports of mysterious “power downs” in the WTC in the weeks and days before the attacks.

4.) Reports of explosions beneath the North Tower moments before the impact of Flight 11.

5.) Reports of the removal of bomb-sniffing dogs from the WTC during the week prior to the attacks.

6.) The discovery of nano-thermite, or high explosive material in the WTC dust.

7.) The free-fall manner in with the WTC towers collapsed.

8.) The reports of a series of explosions in the moments prior, and during the collapses of both buildings.

9.) The discovery of pools of molten steel beneath the wreckage of the WTC towers.

10.) Military exercises conducted on the morning of 9/11 that simulated, in part, the attacks that actually occurred (or went “live”).

11.) Reports of a state of emergency and evacuation at Hopkins International Airport in Cleveland on the morning of September 11th.

12.) Reports of FEMA personnel descending upon New York City the day before the attacks.

13.) The erratic flight paths of the hijacked planes. (Why, for example, did Flight 11 fly north into the Adirondack region, away from NYC, before vectoring due south to strike the North Tower?)

14.) Insider trading (“put options” relating to American and United Airlines, literally hundreds of times above normal) in the days prior to the attacks.

15.) The role of former CIA Executive Director Alvin Bernard Krongard in providing his former employer, Deutsche Bank Alex. Brown, with CIA data through which insider trading related to 9/11 was facilitated.

16.) The resignation of Mayo Shattuck as head of Deutsche Bank Alex. Brown on September 12, 2001.

17.) The “mysterious” collapse of World Trade Center 7 at 5:25 PM (having not been struck by any aircraft).

18.) WTC owner Larry Silverstein’s on camera admission that WTC7 was “pulled” or imploded.

19.) The British Broadcasting Corporation’s announcement of WTC 7’s collapse an entire half hour before the collapse occurred (An onsite reporter with the BBC is shown reporting on WTC 7’s collapse as the building is still standing behind her!).

20.) Mayor Giuliani’s undisguised fear of venturing too close to the WTC towers while they were aflame.

21.) Damage to the Pentagon far more consistent with a missile strike than an aircraft impact.

22.) Conflicting reports of what was seen striking the Pentagon.

23.) The confiscation by federal officials, of all security videos that would show what actually struck the Pentagon.

24.) The initial failure of the Secret Service to remove the president to safety upon learning of the attacks.

25.) President Bush’s strange behavior during the attacks. (Why did he continue participating in an elementary school reading session while aware that America was under attack?)

26.) The president’s hideous state hopping expedition aboard Air Force One, during the afternoon of September 11th, before finally being “allowed” to return to Washington to address the nation in the evening.

27.) A wire transfer of $100,000 to Mohammed Atta, the lead 9/11 hijacker, by the chief of Pakistani intelligence in the weeks prior to the attacks.

28.) The close ties between the Bush and Bin Laden families.

29.) The smuggling of members of the Bin Laden family out of the country on board a US government aircraft in the days following the attacks, when all other aircraft were grounded.

30.) Money reportedly paid to families of 9/11 victims in return for their silence. (According to some accounts, the dollar amount of said money exceeds the amount authorized by the Bush Administration to investigate the attacks.)

31.) The passage of 411 days before the Bush Administration finally acquiesced to an investigation of the attacks.

32.) Reports of strange and mysterious deaths of certain 9/11 eyewitnesses.

33.) The strangely broad distribution of the wreckage of United Airlines Flight 93 near Shanksville, PA.

34.) Reports of radio and electronic interference in the area of Shanksville, PA. on the morning of September 11th.

35.) Reports of President Bush having witnessed the impact of United Airlines Flight 11 on closed circuit television. (“There goes one terrible pilot”, as he reported to an inquiring young boy at a town hall meeting in Florida in December of 2001.)

To some, the preceding paragraphs may read like an unrestrained exercise in anti-American sedition. One certainly understands that visceral reactions of one kind or another still accompany most discussions of the 9/11 attacks. However, while it may be difficult for readers to process, this call for a new investigation should be seen as directly pro-American, as false-flag attacks are invariably intended as end runs around the decency of ordinary people. Simply stated, people are not innately militaristic which is problematic for those who are intent on waging war.

Finally, nothing that I have presented here is intended to diminish the memory of the victims or the heroism of the first responders. As a nation, we can honor them all by bringing truth and reconciliation to the horrendous tragedy.

Let us begin, forthwith.
