Recently Queens has been in the news for several investigations; arrests or trials of political candidates, political office holders; or their close relatives and associates.

Aside from several instances of the candidates living outside of the Flushing districts they were campaigning in, most of the candidates charged in our district have been linked to raising money, taking money or manipulating money illegally — if not the candidate themselves; then others very close to their campaigns have been implicated. The penalties when convicted, except perhaps for Brian McLaughlin, have been so mild that it’s been no deterrent.

The media and the local press set the stage for these economic crimes by constantly dwelling on how much money a candidate is raising. In fact, the first coverage of the campaign by one local newspaper, was a front page spread on each candidate and the amount of money they had raised when announcing…
