Will an unsupported bridge rise on City Island?
On September 23, just one week before “the official notice to proceed,” I had the opportunity – notified at the last minute – to attend a hastily convened meeting called by the Department of Traffic (DOT), at which City Island residents got their first chance at a public hearing to sound off against a proposed new bridge to the island. The structure is to be topped off with a 150 foot tall “football goal post,” conceived in order to impress tourists if New York City’s bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games had been accepted.
And sound off they did. Not one audience member from the over hundred who came to P.S. 175’s cafeteria, supported the Godzilla Bridge, as residents call it.
The new bridge — the island’s only access to the mainland — is meant to replace the current Gothic structure dating from 1899. It’s scheduled to take 3 1/2 years…
